Characterization of mucoid mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 isolated after exposure to ozone.

چکیده
Seventy mucoid mutants retaining the phenotypic properties of the ultraviolet-induced lon strains of Escherichia coli K-12 were isolated after treatment of strain MQ259 (lon+) with ozone. They produce mucoid colonies at 37 C on minimal agar, are abnormally sensitive to radiation, and tend to grow in long aseptate filaments after irradiation with ultraviolet light. Results indicate also that ozone sensitivity, radiosensitivity, and mucoidy are pleiotropic properties of the lon gene.

Isolation and characterization of tributyltin resistant mutants of Escherichia coli.
Two classes of tributyltin (TBT) resistant, spontaneous mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 were isolated, using a cytochrome containing (W 1485) and a cytochrome deficient ( SASX76 ) strain. In contrast to the cytochrome sufficient strain, the cytochrome deficient strain was found to be fifty times more sensitive to TBT. The class I mutants, isolated from strain W 1485, also showed cross-resistan...
متن کاملRegulatory Mechanisms for Synthesis of Capsular Polysaccharide in Mucoid Mutants of Escherichia Coli K12.
Jacob and Monod have proposed that regulator genes may control the syntheses of several related enzymes in Escherichia coli K12.1 The present paper provides evidence for a regulator gene (designated R1)2 which controls capsular polysaccharide synthesis in E. coli K12. Certain mutants of E. coli produce large mucoid colonies which are characterized by overproduction of polysaccharide. The polysa...
متن کاملStudy of Mutations in the DNA gyrase gyrA Gene of Escherichia coli
Quinolones are a large and widely consumed class of synthetic drugs. Expanded-spectrum quinolones, like ciprofloxacin are highly effective against Gram-negative bacteria, especially Escherichia coli. In E. coli the major target for quinolones is DNA gyrase. This enzyme is composed of two subunits, GyrA and GyrB encoding by gyrA and gyrB, respectively. Mutations in either of these genes cause qu...

متن کاملThe involvement of mutation in the serine 83 of quinolone resistant determining regions of the GyrA Gene in resistance to ciprofloxacin in Escherichia coli .
Appearance of bacteria resistant to antibacterial agents puts physicians in trouble and threatens the health of the world. The rapid development of bacterial resistance in Escherichia coli to ciprofloxacin makes difficult the treatment of infectious diseases. So, detection of the locations of possible mutations in gyrase A gene ( gyrA ) in these mutants is very important to determine the mech...
